Pas de Calais
In 2008 we were invited to conduct an archaeological survey of a property in northern France.

There are two areas of specific interest:

  1. Medieval ruins along the front of the property.
  2. The garden, which local legend says was the centre of a Roman village.

Archival records showed that the village was founded in the second century by Romans. Stone structures along the road contained Roman blocks with iron staple holes.

Our geophysical survey of the garden indicated a rectangular structure at a depth of 1 metre. Fieldwalking found numerous Roman and medieval artefacts.

Our geophysical survey of a cellar indicated a subterranean system in the direction of the local church.

The high water table delayed further study.
